Success Stories & Testimonials

My Grad Story

  • Frazer - HR Officer, De Vere Beaumont Estate

Where you studied and the subject

I studied BA Human Resource Management at the University of Leeds.

What attracted you to The Principal Hotel Company Grad Scheme?

I originally joined Principal Hotel Company as a Placement Year during my third year of university. I joined the Central HR Team and worked across each HR area within Head Office. This gave me a great overview of the role of HR within a growing company, complimenting my studies at university. I was fortunate to continue working part-time into my final year of university before joining the Graduate Scheme at the end of my degree.

    Highlights of the scheme

The scheme provides a platform to constantly develop knowledge and experiences. My highlights have included attending a number of Careers Fairs and Recruitment events at local schools/universities and communities. I have also presented sections at Company Training Events, such as, UK Immigration and HR Systems. The Quarterly Graduate modules are also a great opportunity to increase specialist knowledge, including Finance and Leadership, in a fun and engaging environment with fellow graduates in the cohort.

What do you feel you have personally achieved on the scheme?

The scheme provided me with the unique opportunity to gain a detailed exposure to the role of HR within both a Head Office and a Hotel environment. This allowed me to develop confidence and credibility in delivering Human Resources activities, supporting colleagues at hotel-level and across the wider Group.

What advice would you give to graduates looking to apply?

You get out what you put in. Be prepared to take yourself out of your comfort zone, by taking on as many new and exciting opportunities as possible.

    What are you doing now?

I am now the HR Officer at De Vere Beaumont Estate in Old Windsor, providing generalist HR support to approx. 250 colleagues.

  • Suzanne - Graduate Manager, De Vere Wokefield Estate

Where you studied and the subject

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. I certainly realised this as a student at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland where I studied BA Honours International Tourism Management.
My time at university has certainly given me the confidence to cease opportunities and take chances. As part of my degree at university, I voluntarily spent time living and studying abroad in Croatia and this opportunity allowed me to take a journey into myself. Living abroad and travelling was an amazing investment in myself. I am passionate about travelling because I love the exposure of meeting new people, understanding different cultures, and lifestyles in comparison to when I am living in my homeland. This opportunity has enabled me to develop many soft skills and cease several more opportunities at university. I graduated from university in 2016 with a first class honours degree and I realised I wanted to develop myself further both professionally and personally.

What attracted you to The Principal Hotel Company Grad Scheme?

I applied for the Graduate Operations Management Programme which was advertised through my university. With previous experience in hospitality, I knew The Principal Hotel Company was the perfect company to cease more opportunities and develop my career to a managerial level in a fast-paced hospitality environment. I was hugely attracted to the fact I was able to gain an insight into all departments of the hotel business such as: Food and Beverage, Conference & Events, Front Office, Housekeeping, Sales and Reservations, Finance and Human Resources, with the aim of finding my niche department to whereby I want to specialise in.
With specific criteria of the position such as relocating away from home was not an issue. In fact, I saw it as another great path to escape the ordinary and pursue a career in something I am strongly passionate about. Currently, I am based at Wokefield Estate hotel in Reading. I have absolutely loved the challenges I have faced in such a large property. However, with determination and hard work you certainly get the best outcome from the scheme. It is not an easy path to a management position; it is intensive, challenging, exciting and most certainly rewarding. If you are a hardworking, team driven and motivated person who lives and breathes hospitality, the graduate scheme is your gateway to becoming a successful manager.

    Highlights of the scheme

I have been a Graduate Manager for one year with the end unfortunately approaching; I have certainly met the most inspiring people through this journey who have guided me in the perfect direction to a managerial level. I have so many highlights from the scheme, however certainly winning Quality Winner of the month (company employee recognition strategy) and attending the yearly event in Manchester was a great experience. Alongside this, becoming a Quality Assurer for the Quality Wins team at the hotel. I have also had the honour to work at major events in our Group’s other properties throughout the UK. Further to this, I have achieved excellent leadership and managerial skills through the inspirational leaders I work alongside, made improvements to the key discipline departments I have worked in and I have undertaken several excellent training courses the company provide.

What advice would you give to graduates looking to apply?

If you have a positive attitude towards your work, like to take charge of your own career path and development and have a real passion for hospitality then the Graduate Operations Management Programme is the perfect opportunity to kick-start your career.

    What are you doing now?

My end goal of the scheme is to focus on Food and Beverage because from my perspective it is a vital component of the hotel industry and when I spent time in this department, it was challenging but rewarding simultaneously. I strived for quality and applied process and effective standards into F&B in order to optimise employee and hotel performance.
Furthermore, I am keen to use the skills I have gained and currently have to challenge my potential and ability to drive my career forward to the next level…just like you should too and apply!

What attracted you to The Principal Hotel Company Grad Scheme?

I was attracted to the Principal Hotel Company Graduate Programme because I had stayed at the Hotel Russell in London for a weekend break and was just amazed by the venue! I was really attracted by the fact I could tailor my programme to do operations, but with a HR focus as well as a mentor on and off property.

    Highlights of the scheme

I would say my highlights on the scheme have been (outside of the 6 months I spent in People Development! learning to a run to an event and as well as having inside knowledge and a real appreciation of what each department is like. The knowledge and experience I have gained throughout my time on the programme has been amazing and I have been provided with so many opportunities! As well as great contacts throughout the group and friendships with the other graduates.

What do you feel you have personally achieved on the scheme?

I feel I have achieved lots throughout my time on the grad programme. If I had to pin-point one aspect I would say it is leadership skills and confidence in general with my day to day duties, speaking with the other managers as well being able to run a training session! Before the scheme, I was quite nervous when presenting but throughout my time in HR and the group work projects my confidence has developed so much! It’s still an area I’m continuing to develop.

What advice would you give to graduates looking to apply?

My advice to other graduates looking to apply for the scheme would be to stay open to location as it’s an amazing experience and Edinburgh, for example, is an amazing city to live and work in! I’d also recommend to make sure you are a team player but make sure you show leadership skills throughout the whole process!

    What are you doing now?

In January, I was so happy to take to the role of People Development Officer based at The Roxburghe! I love my new role and can’t wait to see what the future brings! Upon finishing the programme I have also been awarded with a management 1st HIT Scotland Scholarship which will help me to develop my management skills even further as well as a final presentation to my People Development Manager and General Manager in my final module in November!

  • Sarah - Graduate Manager, Principal York

Where you studied and the subject

I studied at Loughborough University and graduated with a first class BA Honours degree in Drama.

What attracted you to The Principal Hotel Company Grad Scheme?

After graduating, I moved back to my hometown of Nottingham and began working at Eastwood Hall Hotel. It was at Eastwood that I gained a vast experience in several departments including: Conference and Banqueting, Restaurant and Bar, Reception, HR and Finance. I heard about the PH Graduate Scheme after I had been working at Eastwood just shy of two years. My HR Manager (Emma Voller) put me forward for the application with the belief that I would make an excellent candidate. She supported me throughout the whole application process and I am very grateful for her guidance.  I was attracted to the Graduate Scheme because I knew it would be great way to progress through the company. I have always craved knowledge and enjoyed learning, the scheme is excellent for developing your skills and enhancing your career opportunities.

What are your highlights of the scheme so far?

My highlights of the scheme I think will always be the satisfaction of getting to surprise and delights guests and knowing that your special gestures and quality of service made an impact on their journey with us. In particular, receiving a postcard from Dame Judi Dench thanking me for my kindness!  Personally, I feel like I have achieved a growth in confidence when dealing with pressured situations and a wealth of knowledge and experience in numerous departments.

I would advise potential applicants to really devote themselves to the role. It can be hard work that’s physically or mentally demanding but you get such a great sense of achievement when you succeed in your role. Team work is essential, listen to others and don’t push to be the loudest voice in the room instead, aim to be the most distinctive. Live and breathe the company values and let your passion and ambition shine through. Embrace everything even the less desirable jobs because you will gain so much respect for your colleagues and a much better understanding of the business.

    What are you doing now?

Currently I am thirteen months in to my grad scheme. Thus far I have spent time in Housekeeping, Conference & Banqueting, Restaurant, Bar, Garden Room and Reservations. I think my favourite department so far has been Reservations and I have really thrived on the guest interaction. I have just started Reception and am excited to see what happens next!
